Frequently Asked Questions
What genres do you work with?
We are mainly focused on music under the umbrella of modern pop and associated sub-genres. Synthpop, bedroom pop, alt/indie pop, trap pop, dark pop, and songs in those arenas.
Granted, it doesn’t mean we can’t make something incredible, and more than a few times artists have come to us specifically to bring modern pop sensibility to their artistry.
That being said, we are not the best team if you’re looking for live instrument-heavy genres.
What stage does my song need to be in before reaching out to John & his team?
It could be at any stage, but we do require a demo or, at minimum, a concept in mind that you’d like us to build. If you can point in the direction of where you want to go, we can build the road to get you there.
What is a songwriter vs a producer vs an engineer?
The producer can take on a lot of shapes, but for us it’s about being immersed in the creative direction and sonic sculpting of the track from the ground up.
A music producer will be in the trenches, crafting sounds, helping refine the arrangement of the song, deciding on layering, and bringing all the pieces together cohesively.
A songwriter is focused on the lyric and melody of the song, which let’s face it, is the core of how people will relate to your story, song, and message!
An engineer could either specialie or do one of several things: recording, mixing (refining the clarity of the existing sounds made in production) and mastering (final touches on the stereo mix to make it shine).
We have a team of specialists that encompass all of the above aspects, and on our initial call we figure out who is needed for a particular song/release.
How fast does a typical full production take?
Typically, the entire process takes 4-8 weeks. For an EP or album, 3-6 months.
I want to get started today. How soon can John & his team start with my song?
Availability fluctuates week to week but we are usually 2-4 weeks booked out. But hey, it used to be 8 weeks until we brought on Savannah & Verona, some absolute badasses that are helping us serve you faster.
I need things done NOW, can we push it up for deadlines?
We can’t make any promises, but when you reach out (or as you’re reading this and you need us to push a deadline) let us know ASAP so we can accommodate.
Do I need to use particular software, plug-ins, etc?
Nope! We are very comfortable working between different DAWs, and on one of our weekly sessions we can walkthrough anything you need to know on your end!
How do you make it work being in a separate location?
We use Zoom as well as hi-res audio streaming software to get the screen and song to you in near-real time. Through this, we can refine the song together like you’re together in the same room, through the wonders of the internet (magical fairy dust begins to shimmer)
Do you charge hourly, by the song, what?
We do all-in rates. That means everything is included, and we are in it through the end. No cap on the process, we just don’t think it’s fair to be nickel and dimed when it comes to your story and your art.
The only way that we end up charging an additional fee is going back to a song after final masters are approved and fully delivered.
Why aren’t your rates online?
Investments vary wildly between projects, and it would truly be a disservice to throw out a number without knowing more info. You may be partway through recording and production, or you may be starting from a voice memo, which are very different to care and nurture!
That’s why we have a 2-minute form and phone call process, so we can be confident we are bringing the best dang solution we can, and not including anything unnecessary.
We finished the song but I want to go back and change it up, can we?
Yes we can! This is the only case in which we do charge an unarchival fee, and potentially additional cost depending on the amount of changes needed.
This has happened only 2 times over the last 6 years, so it’s very rare. We intentionally take our time in the music making process to allow all the creative juju to arrive and find it’s way into the track :)
How do I upload files for working together?
We provide you with a private client link for all uploads and downloads.
How do you want demos sent?
Any streamable link is fine, Soundcloud, Dropbox, Google Drive. PLEASE MAKE SURE IT’S OPENABLE FOR US. Check this in an incognito browser.
